Australia National Public Toilet Map

From time to time we come across public dataset that are quite unique and specific to some countries. The Australia public toilet map is an interesting dataset, not just because of the nature of the subject “Toilet” but the usefulness of such organize information for people in the country.
 
The Australia National public toilet map list about 16,820 public toilet location spread across Australia. Data is structured by state with complete address and usability information such as: male or female specific, whether payment is required, parking availability, hours of operation, facilities for baby change, existence of showers and drinking water availability.

The most interesting metric in this dataset, in terms of data analysis, we found is the toilet type. People used to city life may not envision any other type of toilet than the classic Sewerage toilet widely available in apartments and houses in most big cities.

In Australia National public toilet map we have identified 7 types: Sewerage, Septic, Drop toilet, Compost, Sealed Vault, Automatic and Pit. We did some research to gather as much information for our reader on these toilet types.

Sewerage toilet: this is the classic toilet system in use in most cities around the world were the toilet unit is indoor, the waste is pipe out by gravity and water pressure into the  public Sewerage system.

 Naturally most public toilet in Australia are of Sewerage type, most of located in New South Wales state.

Septic toilet: The second most popular type of toilet in Australia, the State of Queensland is home to the largest number at about 475 units. Septic toilets are similar to the Sewerage toilet with the only difference that waste is collected in outdoor septic tanks.

Drop and Pit toilets:  Drop and pit toilets basically have the same design. These toilet are generally made of a small hole build atop a ground pit where human waste is collected. These are the more primitive and simple toilet design, most ly found in the State of Victoria.

 Compost toilet: Compost toilet are generally called dry toilet because they don’t required the use of water or very little water. Human waste is mixed with sawdust or other material for decomposition. Queensland and Victoria are states with most public compost toilet in Australia.

Composting Toilet

Sealed Vault toilet: Vault toilet is similar to pit toilet with the difference being that, a sealed container is buried in the pit where all waste can be remove by pumping. This design is more environment friendly. The state of Victoria is home to most Australia public sealed vault toilet with about 45 units.

Automatic toilet: This is the most advanced design of public toilet; the emphasis is put here on the flushing mechanism more than the waste disposal. Automatic toilet do not required human action to flush away waste; it is generally equipped with motion sensor detector to activate water flushing after usage. The state of Victoria is by far home to most Australia public automatic toilet with about 130 units.

It will come as a surprise to many that the US also extends its generosity to many rich countries, to a considerable level.

The chart below shows that, Japan for instance benefited from a large combined assistance of $188,850,384 in 2011, the year of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

2- US Forein assistance to Africa

US assistance is unevenly spread across Africa, the poorest continent.

Egypt is among the country receiving most of the money about 3 billion dollars per year since 2002. Assistance to Egypt almost reaches 5 billion dollar in 2002. Kenya has received an average of 1.3 billion dollar since 2007 making it one of the consistent largest beneficiaries of US assistance.

The smallest recipient of US assistance received an average of 25 million dollars a year. Cameroon is one of those countries symbolizing the disparity in us assistance. Despite being a poor country with a low GDP (1316 dollar in 2010) and high unemployment (about 30%), Cameroon have received its highest assistance in 2012 with a little over 63 million dollar.
